Summary

Columbia Heights Education Campus (CHEC) is a large public school in Washington, DC, serving 1,563 students in grades 6–12 as a combined middle and high school campus within the District of Columbia Public Schools. The school’s clearest strength is graduation: at 83.7% in 2024–2025, CHEC outperforms both the DCPS average (77.6%) and the state average (78.7%), and it beats nearby neighborhood schools like Cardozo Education Campus (70.7%) and Dunbar High School (81.9%).

However, academic proficiency tells a more challenging story. Only 13.3% of CHEC students are proficient in math, less than half the DCPS rate of 33.3%, and the decline is dramatic across grade levels: 6th graders score above the state average (34.2% vs. 27.7%), but by 8th grade proficiency drops to 7.3%, well below the state’s 24.7%. In high school, Algebra I proficiency is just 2.1%. Science is even more concerning, with only 1.44% of students proficient versus 16.81% for DCPS. English Language Arts is the relative bright spot, with 36% proficient—slightly below the state average of 39.6% but far stronger than nearby Roosevelt High School (17.8%) or Cardozo (19.2%).

Compared to selective and magnet schools in the area, CHEC’s test scores are much lower than Benjamin Banneker High School (64.4% math) or McKinley Technology High School (30.5% math), though CHEC’s graduation rate remains respectable. CHEC ranks 15th of 36 DC high schools, up from 21st two years ago, and it serves African American students especially well (4 stars), while Hispanic student outcomes are a relative concern. With per-student spending of $31,052 and a 10.4-to-1 student-teacher ratio, CHEC has solid resources; the biggest opportunity for improvement is fixing the math pipeline that erodes student gains between 6th and 8th grade, and rebuilding science proficiency from its current near-zero level.
