Summary

Vernon Center Middle School serves 651 students in grades 6–8 in Vernon, Connecticut, and has climbed steadily from the bottom third of Connecticut middle schools a decade ago to the 61st percentile today, a 3-star rating that places it solidly above the middle of the pack. The school is part of the Vernon School District, which ranks in the lower-middle tier of Connecticut districts, but Vernon Center itself performs better than its district, exceeding state averages in English language arts and science most years. With a student–teacher ratio of about 10:1 and roughly 60% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, the school serves a higher-need population than many surrounding communities.

Academically, the school's strongest results are in English language arts and science. In 2025–26, 7th graders posted a 62.6% ELA proficiency rate versus 52.2% statewide, and 8th graders reached 59.8% versus 51.1% statewide. Perhaps the most encouraging recent development is math: after several years at or below state averages, the school exceeded Connecticut in all three grades in 2025–26, including a notable jump in 7th grade from 40.5% to 50.5% proficiency. The school has also been especially effective with historically underserved student groups — Hispanic students ranked in the 77th percentile statewide and low-income students in the 75th percentile, both earning 4-star ratings.

Compared with nearby schools, Vernon Center Middle School sits in the middle of a sharply divided regional landscape. Affluent neighboring schools like Tolland Middle School, Timothy Edwards School, and Capt. Nathan Hale School rank in the 76th–89th percentile, while schools in East Hartford and Manchester rank much lower. Vernon Center outperforms several schools that spend considerably more per student, including Hall Memorial School and East Windsor Middle School. The biggest remaining opportunities are in math — where the gap to top nearby schools is still substantial — and chronic absenteeism, which at 16.4% has improved to match the state average but remains above the district's 11.1%. Strengthening 6th grade ELA, the school's weakest grade level, and continuing to reduce absences could help sustain the school's decade-long climb.

Open Quote The principal is an unreasonable bully. He has smiles for the school board, superintendent and the thugs that have their underwear hanging out, but is absolutely useless to parents and good students. He can not be trusted to take care of and watch over our best and brightest. The standard he sets is the lowest possible one. Close Quote
