Summary

Pulaski Middle School serves 839 students in grades 6–8 in New Britain, CT, and is part of the New Britain School District, one of the lowest-ranked districts in the state. The school ranks 256th out of 258 Connecticut middle schools, placing it in the bottom 1% with a 0-star rating, and it has ranked at or near the bottom of the state for the past decade. About 80% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and more than one in three students (37.4%) is chronically absent — well above the state rate of 16.4%.

Academically, proficiency rates on state assessments are extremely low across every subject and grade level. ELA proficiency ranges from 9.4% to 10.4%, math ranges from 4.8% to 15.0%, and 8th grade science sits at 7.8% — roughly one-fifth of the state average in each subject. Pulaski consistently trails even its closest low-performing peers, including Slade Middle School in the same district and McDonough Middle School in Hartford, which both outperform Pulaski in most subjects. Nearby higher-performing schools such as Sedgwick Middle School in West Hartford, Catherine M. McGee Middle School in Berlin, and Irving A. Robbins Middle School in Farmington have chronic absenteeism rates of 8–12%, compared to Pulaski's 37.4%.

The most striking contrast is with House of Arts Letters and Science (HALS) Academy, located just 2.7 miles away in the same district. HALS ranks 3rd in the state and posts math proficiency rates of 76–87%, compared to Pulaski's 4.8–15.0%. Notably, Pulaski's per-student spending ($14,160) is actually higher than HALS's ($13,315), and Pulaski's student-teacher ratio of 13.1 is lower than HALS's 17.4. This suggests the performance gap is not driven by money or class size. The most urgent priorities for Pulaski are improving attendance, addressing instructional gaps, and finding ways to replicate strategies from successful schools serving similar populations.

Open Quote I've attended this school from '91 to '93. If you want your child to focus on his or her education this is not the school. The kids were out of control, most of the teacher's time was spent babysitting. My overall opinion of the staff was good, but the kids that attended this school had no home-taught respect or manners. I would never send my child to this school. Close Quote
