Summary

Slade Middle School is a public middle school located in New Britain, Connecticut, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 692 students. The school is part of the New Britain School District, which is ranked 155 out of 156 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger. Slade Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Connecticut middle schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Slade Middle School significantly underperforms compared to the state and its own district in standardized test scores. In the 2024-2025 school year, only 8.1% of 6th graders, 9.6% of 7th graders, and 14.3% of 8th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state averages of 50% or higher. The math proficiency rates are even lower, with only 5.1% of 6th graders, 3.8% of 7th graders, and 5.1% of 8th graders meeting or exceeding standards, compared to the state averages of around 40-43%. Slade Middle School also has extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 17.7% to 37.8% over the past few years, significantly higher than the state average.

Despite spending over $15,000 per student, Slade Middle School is still struggling to improve student outcomes. This suggests that the school may need to re-evaluate its resource allocation and explore more effective strategies to support student learning. The consistently low performance of student subgroups at Slade Middle School, such as Hispanic students and students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, also raises concerns about educational equity and the school's ability to provide equitable learning opportunities for all students. In comparison, the House of Arts Letters and Science (HALS) Academy, also in the New Britain School District, ranks in the top 1% of Connecticut middle schools and has significantly higher proficiency rates in both English Language Arts and Mathematics.

Open Quote Slade, one of the worst places you can exist in during ‘’middle school’’, not only because of the students, it's also because of the way we are treated. It's ridiculous knowing not only the teachers usually don’t know how to teach themselves, usually blaming the students. In all respect, there are some good ones, to tell the truth, but the majority is bad.

Not only, not considering the students well being, and teaching them that acting spoiled is
‘’The way to go!’’ (The way to get out of trouble) Also the ‘’classrooms’’ smell afull ! The students curse often. If I were to stay in this community for as long as I did, I would curse often too. The quality is terrible, there are literal rats in the walls. Not even including the many skipping that happens in the stalls including: skipping, attempted makeouts, and etc. The one cafe’ in the school has often has ran out of food leaving some hungry or late. The food in the cafe’ tastes like burnt deep fried plastic, which gives the impression the they don’t care about our . The last thing I want to talk about their reputation. Its constantly gone down-hill from were it started. (Which was already terrible.) Close Quote
