Summary

Westside Middle School Academy is a grades 6–8 middle school in Danbury, CT, serving 736 students as part of the Danbury School District. While the district ranks in the 12th percentile statewide, Westside ranks 127th out of 258 Connecticut middle schools (51st percentile, 3 stars). About 54% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, yet the school maintains a chronic absenteeism rate of just 6.1%—far better than the district rate of 14.7% and the state rate of 16.4%. The school's performance has been notably stable over the past decade, hovering between the 46th and 56th percentiles statewide.

Academically, Westside dramatically outperforms its same-district peers, Broadview Middle School and Rogers Park Middle School, by roughly 20 to 30 percentage points in nearly every subject. In 8th-grade science, 56.2% of Westside students met proficiency, exceeding the state average of 50.9% and far above the district's 34.1%. English language arts results are near or slightly above state averages across all grades. However, 6th- and 7th-grade math proficiency trails the state by 8 to 13 percentage points, making math the school's clearest area for growth. Westside's attendance profile is comparable to much more affluent schools like John Read Middle School (6.1%) and Whisconier Middle School (6.5%).

Westside achieves strong results despite a higher student-teacher ratio (16.5:1) and lower per-pupil spending ($13,403) than nearby schools like Broadview Middle School ($14,232) and Rogers Park Middle School ($14,354). Subgroup results are strongest for Hispanic students (68th percentile statewide) and low-income students (54th percentile), while female students rank in the 41st percentile, male students in the 32nd, and White students in the 30th. Though not rapidly improving, the 2025-26 results show a rebound from the previous year, particularly in ELA and 8th-grade math. For parents, Westside represents a strong, reliable option within a lower-performing district, with its biggest opportunity for improvement in middle-grade mathematics.

Open Quote My sixth grader was new to the WMSA STEM program for the 2017-2018 school year. What a complete difference from King Street School. This school has a zero tolerance bullying program, which is awesome. Your kids will be really safe there and nothing gets swept under the rug like KSI. The academics are great. All work is submitted online via Google Classroom. The teachers are phenomenal! Since this school is by lottery, there's a diverse bunch of kids with all skill levels. The teachers go out of their way to help the kids extra when needed. The math teacher (6-STEM), Ms. Robbins, assures the kids that they will love math, and they do because of her. The teachers are all very respectful of parents and children and just kind to the kids. The counselor, Ms. Perez knows everything that is going on and if your child needs a little help, she's there. Likewise with the principal. Dr. LaBanca. May 2018 he was one of 50 educators across the US recognized for promoting STEM education. There's nothing negative about this school. They want your child to enjoy learning and succeed. Close Quote
