Summary

Vinal Technical High School is a mid-sized career and technical high school in Middletown, CT, serving 522 students in grades 9–12 as part of the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System. The school offers a hands-on, career-focused education with a favorable student-teacher ratio of about 10.6 to 1, and roughly 36% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Vinal's most striking profile is a "high graduation, low proficiency" one: its graduation rate has climbed to 96.9%, well above the state average of 91.2%, yet only 8.4% of 11th graders scored proficient in SAT math in 2025–2026, compared with a statewide rate of 31.3%.

Vinal's graduation rate outpaces many nearby schools, including Middletown High School (91.5%), Portland High School (90.2%), Orville H. Platt High School (89.8%), and Francis T. Maloney High School (89.1%). However, its math proficiency is similar to H. C. Wilcox Technical High School (5.6%) but far behind Berlin High School (43.1%), Cromwell High School (47.8%), and Haddam-Killingworth High School (48.8%). On a more positive note, science proficiency has more than doubled in two years, from 13.0% to 29.2%, closing the gap with Middletown High School (31.8%) and Orville H. Platt (32.4%). Chronic absenteeism, at 22.6%, is higher than the state average of 16.4% and the technical district average of 18.3%, but much better than Middletown High (34.6%) and Francis T. Maloney (29.2%).

Vinal serves a student body with moderate poverty compared to surrounding schools — its free/reduced-price lunch rate of 35.8% is lower than Middletown High (51.2%) and H. C. Wilcox Technical High School (45.6%), but higher than Berlin High School (22.6%) and Cromwell High School (29.9%). The school has made meaningful progress: its overall state rank improved from the 8th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 20th percentile in 2025–2026, and its graduation rate has risen nearly 10 points since 2020–2021. However, math proficiency remains in single digits and absenteeism has crept back up in the last two years, suggesting the gains are real but not yet secure. For parents, Vinal offers a close-knit technical environment with strong completion outcomes, but families should weigh academic proficiency challenges alongside the school's career-focused mission.

Open Quote Vinal Technical High School ranks 133rd out of a possible 161, statewide. That places them in the bottom 1/3rd in terms of overall performance ranking and very close to the bottom 1/4. One gets the impression that many of their students are there for an easy ride to a high school diploma. Discipline is a low priority and behavior is an issue in the absense of a strong disciplinary code. Profanity is openly and freely used between students and one can observe students passionately kissing on the school grounds. This does not appear to be a school that places importance on character building. Close Quote
