Summary

Metropolitan Arts Academy is a PK–8 school in Denver, CO, serving 302 students in the Westminster Public Schools district, where about 80% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school’s most striking strength is its attendance: in 2024-2025, only 11.5% of students were chronically absent, compared to a 38.9% district average and a 28.4% state average. This is the lowest rate among all nearby comparison schools, including Colorado STEM Academy (15.6%) and Fairview Pk-8 (35.7%), making it a remarkable achievement for a high-poverty school.

Academically, the school ranks in the 22nd percentile statewide, but it has climbed significantly from the 1st percentile a decade ago. Its clearest academic bright spots are in the middle grades: 8th-grade science proficiency reached 52% in 2025-2026, far exceeding the district (22.3%) and state (35.4%) averages, while 8th-grade ELA proficiency hit 44%, above the state average. Overall ELA proficiency (31.7%) is a relative strength, but math remains a major challenge at just 17.6% proficiency, with 7th grade particularly low at 9.3%. Notably, Metropolitan outperforms its closest neighbor, Fairview Pk-8, by roughly 26 points in ELA and 14 points in math.

For parents, this is a small school with a positive attendance culture and a clear upward trajectory, though overall test scores remain below state averages. The middle school portion appears to be a genuine strength, especially in science and literacy, while math and early elementary reading need the most attention. Given its high-poverty context, Metropolitan is performing relatively well compared with similar nearby schools like Mesa Elementary, Orchard Park Academy, and Sherrelwood Elementary, and it offers a solid foundation for families seeking a neighborhood school with improving academics and strong daily attendance.

Open Quote Caucasian students are bullied by teachers and students. My child was bullied by the middle school art teacher. It was not a safe place. Close Quote

Open Quote I attended school there a long time ago and the memories they left with me were horrible. There was this one teacher name Mrs. Bereans, she was really harsh and mean especially toward me for some reason. I would apologize to her and she would reply, "Sorry doesn't cut it!". It was so horrible. Not only that but when I couldn't pay for my lunch, they gave me a choice of eating crackers and chesse or nothing at all. That's not right because at the time I was just 7 yrs-old. How can someone do that to a child? My advise would be to just find a better school. This school is not a school for childern. This school is full of people who just want to boss and make a child's self-esteem lower. Close Quote
