Summary

Widefield Elementary School of the Arts is a K-5 arts magnet school in Colorado Springs, CO, serving 369 students within School District No. 3 and earning a 4-star state ranking (71st percentile) in 2025-2026. The school pairs its arts-themed curriculum with standout academics: reading proficiency of 58.9% leads every nearby elementary school, while math proficiency of 49.1% is nearly 20 points above its own district's average of 29.5%. Fifth-grade science results (43.6%) also exceed both district and state averages.

One of WESA's most striking features is student attendance. Chronic absenteeism sits at 15.9% - the lowest of any nearby school and far below the district rate of 29.1%, suggesting children genuinely want to be there. The school also produces exceptional results for students who often face the most barriers: Hispanic students rank 6th in Colorado (98th percentile), and low-income students rank 26th statewide (92nd percentile), earning 5 stars for the third year in a row. With a student-teacher ratio of 14.0, classrooms are smaller than at nearby French Elementary (17.8) or Webster Elementary (17.7), giving teachers more room for the personalized, arts-integrated instruction that drives these outcomes.

The school's state ranking has climbed from the 53rd percentile in 2021-2022 to the 71st percentile today - a steady improvement, not a one-year fluke. The main areas to watch are a 4th-grade dip in both reading and math, plus science results that trail two nearby schools. Notably, WESA's closest neighbor, Venetucci Elementary, ranks at the 40th percentile with chronic absenteeism above 33%, underscoring just how much of an outlier this arts-focused school is in its community.

Open Quote I volunteer at Widefield Elementary and have seen first hand just how much the principal, vice principal and staff do each and every single day for each student. I am so grateful and proud to be there! Close Quote

Open Quote This school is in very poor repair with sidewalks falling apart. The teachers are nice and the faculty seems pleasant but come across as aloof. The school curriculum lacks imagination running primarily on pushing paper and book work. Volunteering can feel more like you are an outsider. This school lacks structure with defined rules and guidelines such as a student handbook. The school seems more concerned about head count than they do about behavior and safety. Close Quote
