Summary

Mead High School is a comprehensive public high school in Longmont, CO, serving 1,174 students in grades 9–12 as part of the St. Vrain Valley School District—a district ranked 23rd out of 115 in Colorado. Mead itself ranks 121st out of 338 Colorado high schools (64th percentile, 3 stars), placing it solidly in the middle tier statewide, with about 26% of students qualifying for free/reduced-price lunch and a student-teacher ratio of 21.1.

Mead's clearest strength is keeping students in school. The graduation rate is 97.3%, far above the state average of roughly 84%, and dropout rates are minimal. Chronic absenteeism is just 21.3%—better than nearby Niwot High School (27.7%), Silver Creek High School (28.3%), Erie High School (26.7%), and dramatically lower than Longmont High School (42.1%). Gifted and Talented students are thriving at the 82nd percentile statewide, indicating strong support for high-achieving learners.

The flip side is academic proficiency. SAT reading/writing scores (63% proficient) are near state averages, but math (31%) and especially science (19.6%) lag—science proficiency is less than half that of Niwot (39.4%) or Silver Creek (40.0%). Strikingly, Longmont High, which serves a higher-poverty population with much worse attendance, posts science scores more than double Mead's (42.7%). Scores also fluctuate significantly year to year, and subgroup trends are mixed, with gains for gifted students but recent declines for Hispanic and low-income students. In short, Mead has built a supportive climate that keeps students attending and graduating; the challenge ahead is converting that environment into more consistent academic gains, particularly in math and science.
