Summary

Platte Valley Middle School serves 255 students in grades 6-8 in Kersey, Colorado, a small town in Weld County, and is part of Weld County School District No. Re-7. The school has some notable strengths: its chronic absenteeism rate of 15.7% is roughly half the statewide rate of 28.4%, and its student-to-teacher ratio of 12.1 is more favorable than nearby Eaton Middle School (15.3) and Severance Middle School (15.7). But these advantages have not translated into strong academic results in recent years.

The school's biggest academic challenge is math. Only 20.8% of students are proficient in math, compared with 37.3% statewide and 33.9% across the district. Nearby schools do much better: Eaton Middle School posts 36.6% math proficiency, Severance Middle School 32.9%, and Windsor Charter Academy Middle School 53.1%. English Language Arts is a relative bright spot, with 39.0% proficiency, close to the state average of 44.7%. Science, however, has collapsed — falling from 41.6% proficiency in 2022-2023 to just 20.9% in 2025-2026, a steep decline that flipped the school from above the state average to well below it.

Platte Valley's statewide ranking has slipped from the 67th percentile in 2016-2017 to the 38th percentile today, and the school now earns 2 stars. Students from low-income households — about 52% of the student body — have seen the sharpest drop, with their subgroup ranking falling from the 65th percentile to the 27th percentile in a single year. No subgroup is currently performing above the bottom third statewide. The school clearly outperforms Greeley-area middle schools like Heath Middle School and Franklin Middle School in both reading and math, but it lags well behind Eaton and Severance. With strong attendance and small class sizes, the school has the structural pieces in place to improve — the challenge will be turning those advantages into stronger math and science instruction.
