Ignacio Middle School serves 144 students in grades 6–8 in Ignacio, Colorado, as part of the Ignacio School District No. 11Jt, a small, high-need district ranking in the bottom 3% of Colorado districts. The school has consistently ranked near the bottom of the state — most recently at the 19th percentile — with proficiency rates well below state averages and every nearby middle school. In 2025–2026, just 22.9% of students were proficient in English language arts and 17.7% in math, compared with state rates of 44.7% and 37.3%. Nearby Miller Middle School and Escalante Middle School posted ELA proficiency rates of 47.8% and 46.4%, and even Bayfield Middle School, which also struggles relative to the state, outperformed Ignacio in every subject.

The most pressing challenge is chronic absenteeism. Nearly half of Ignacio's students were chronically absent in 2023–2024 (48.2%), and the rate was 42.3% the following year — far above the statewide rate of 28.4%. Among nearby schools, Bayfield Middle School had the next-highest rate at 39.8%, while Mountain Middle School had just 6.6%. Over half of Ignacio's students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a higher share than at neighboring schools. The school also has one structural advantage: a student-to-teacher ratio of 10.2, the lowest of the comparison group. That advantage has not yet translated into academic gains, largely because teachers cannot accelerate learning for students who are not consistently in class.

Despite these challenges, there are bright spots. Ignacio's low-income students rank at the 47th percentile compared with low-income students statewide — up dramatically from the 14th percentile in 2018–2019 — even though the school's overall rank is just the 19th percentile. That suggests effective strategies with economically disadvantaged students that could be expanded. The data also point to a gap worth investigating: male students consistently outperform female students in statewide subgroup comparisons, with girls falling to the 8th percentile in 2023–2024. And because the school is so small, proficiency rates swing sharply from year to year, making single-year results hard to interpret. Reducing chronic absenteeism and building on the school's strengths with low-income students would go a long way toward lifting outcomes for all students.
