Summary

Bayfield Middle School is a public middle school in Bayfield, Colorado, serving 283 students in grades 6–8 as part of the Bayfield School District No. 10Jt-R. The school currently ranks 309th out of 469 Colorado middle schools — the 34th percentile with a 2-star rating — a steady decline from its 61st-percentile, 3-star ranking in 2017–18. Within the local region, Bayfield sits firmly in the lower half: Mountain Middle School ranks in the 84th percentile, Miller Middle School in the 68th, and Escalante Middle School in the 60th, while only Ignacio Middle School, at the 19th percentile, ranks lower.

CMAS test results show Bayfield below district and state averages in every subject. ELA proficiency is 30.5%, compared with 36.3% for the district and 44.7% statewide. Math proficiency is 24.1% versus 27.6% district and 37.3% state averages. The gap with nearby schools is striking — Mountain Middle posts 63.5% ELA and 63.3% math proficiency, and even Miller and Escalante outperform Bayfield by 15 to 20 percentage points. There is some encouraging news: math proficiency has climbed from 18.1% in 2022–23 to 24.1% today. But ELA has slipped in the opposite direction, falling from 36.0% to 30.5% over the same period, widening the gap to the state.

The most urgent concern is attendance. Bayfield's chronic absenteeism rate hit 39.8% in 2024–25, up sharply from 32.4% the year before and well above the 28.4% state average. Only Ignacio Middle, at 42.3%, has a comparable rate; Mountain Middle sits at just 6.6%. Subgroup results also raise red flags: Gifted and Talented students rank last among all 154 Colorado middle schools, and low-income students collapsed from the 90th percentile statewide to the 33rd in a single year. In many ways, Bayfield's profile now resembles Ignacio's more than its Durango neighbors', pointing to school-level challenges — especially attendance — rather than location as key drivers. Without aggressive intervention, the school risks falling further behind its own district and region.
