Summary

Traut Core Elementary School in Fort Collins, CO, serves 484 students in grades PK–5 and is part of the Poudre School District R-1. It is one of the highest-performing elementary schools in Colorado, ranking 31st out of 943 elementary schools statewide in the 97th percentile with a 5-star rating. This is not a one-year result: Traut has earned 5 stars every year since at least 2015–2016. In 2025–2026, 79.6% of students were proficient in English language arts and 74.2% in math, compared to district averages of 60.1% and 52.2%, and state averages of 44.7% and 37.3%. Even in 5th-grade science, where the school's 64.4% proficiency rate dipped from the prior year, Traut remains far above the district (50.4%) and state (36.1%) averages.

Among nearby schools within about three miles, Traut ranks second only to Zach Elementary School, which sits roughly a mile away and ranks 11th statewide. Traut outranks other neighbors by wide margins, including Werner Elementary School (94th), Kruse Elementary School (114th), and Bacon Elementary School (139th). Traut also stands out for attendance: just 8.9% of students were chronically absent in 2024–2025, about one-third of the district rate of 30.7% and the state rate of 28.4%, and a sharp improvement from 15.9% the year before.

Traut achieves these results while operating with a slightly higher student–teacher ratio (17.7:1) than most nearby schools, and its success is consistent across subgroups, with male and female students both ranking in the 96th percentile statewide. In grade-level results, 5th-grade reading is a standout at 87.7% proficiency, while 4th-grade math is the relative soft spot at 66.7% — still well above district and state averages. For families in southeast Fort Collins, Traut and Zach represent the top tier of public elementary options, and Traut remains an anchor school in a district that already ranks among the top 10% in Colorado.

Open Quote Learning is a non-linear and messy process that takes different forms depending on the individual and his/her diverse learning styles. Traut Core Knowledge curriculum is under the impression that knowledge is static and taught in a linear and orderly way by teachers who "deliver" it to students who receives it quietly and unquestionably. Well, as expected, this type of curriculum only produces students who repeat and memorize rather than think. You cannot think outside the box while sitting in it all day long. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is truly a breath of fresh air, compared to most elementary schools in Fort Collins. My child switched to this school in the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year. I am truly amazed at the difference in teachers, and most importantly Core Knowledge instead of the Common Core junk taught at nearby elementary schools. The principal knows what he is doing and is excellent about communicating to all parents weekly. I'm so happy we made the transition. This school is a perfect fit for my child. Close Quote
