Summary

Valverde Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Denver, Colorado, with 347 students. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Colorado elementary schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Valverde Elementary faces significant challenges, including extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 27.7% to 43.5% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the district and state averages. This appears to be closely linked to the school's poor academic performance, with only 21.3% of Valverde students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 15.5% proficient in math, compared to 41.9% and 32.9% in the School District No. 1, respectively. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 83.94% to 89.34%, suggesting a predominantly low-income population.

While Valverde Elementary struggles, some of the nearby schools, such as Goldrick Elementary and Denver Center for International Studies at Fairmon, perform significantly better on academic measures. This highlights the disparities in educational opportunities within the same district. Addressing the persistent challenges at Valverde Elementary will require a comprehensive approach that addresses both academic and non-academic factors impacting student success.

Open Quote It's a shame we have this failing, out of touch school in our neighborhood. The assistant principal is totally clueless and incompetent. He has no idea how to run a school and he makes no effort to relate to Valverde's Hispanic population. Worse yet, the interim principal failed miserably at what should have been a simple task of reassuring students and parents, after losing our dedicated principal. She's mean and unreasonable, and makes no sense at all when talking about my kids. Close Quote
