Summary

Aurora Science & Technical Middle School is a public charter middle school serving 454 students in grades 6-8 in Aurora, Colorado, which is part of the Aurora Joint District No. 28. Unfortunately, the school consistently underperforms compared to state and district averages on standardized tests, with only 12.1% of 8th graders proficient or better in Science, compared to 15.8% for the district and 36.4% for the state. The school's performance in English Language Arts and Math is also significantly lower than the district and state averages.

The school's challenges are not unique, as nearby middle schools in the same district, such as Aurora Hills, East, and North, also perform poorly. However, some nearby charter schools, like DSST: Conservatory Green, DSST: Montview, and Denver Green School Northfield, significantly outperform the district averages, suggesting that alternative educational models may be more effective in the area.

Additionally, Aurora Science & Technical Middle School has consistently higher dropout rates and very high chronic absenteeism rates, reaching as high as 42.4% in the 2023-2024 school year. These challenges are likely exacerbated by the school's high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with over 87% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Overall, the data suggests that Aurora Science & Technical Middle School and the broader Aurora Joint District No. 28 face significant challenges in providing a high-quality education to their students.

Open Quote Great STEM school option in Aurora. The DSST model is tried and true. It is a NEW school and is still growing, so every year a new class joins bringing additional teachers and resources. There will be growing pains, but the leadership and structure is solid. Close Quote
