Summary

Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs, CO, is a large public high school serving 1,875 students in grades 9–12 as part of Academy School District No. 20, one of Colorado's top-ranked districts. The school consistently ranks among the best traditional high schools in the state, landing 37th of 338 Colorado high schools in 2025–2026 and maintaining 4–5 star ratings for the past decade. Test scores are strong: 83% of 11th graders are proficient in SAT Reading/Writing (vs. 60% statewide), and 51% are proficient in SAT Math (vs. 32% statewide). Among the large traditional high schools in its district, Pine Creek is the clear top performer, outranking Air Academy High School, Discovery Canyon Campus High School, Rampart High School, and Liberty High School in statewide rankings.

Pine Creek also shines in student success beyond test scores. The school posts an exceptional 97.4% graduation rate, far above the state's 85.6% average, and keeps dropout rates below 1%. It's especially effective with gifted and talented students (ranked 6th statewide) and low-income students (ranked 19th of 208 schools), a notable result given only 15% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Hispanic students and male students also perform well above statewide peers. The two smaller charter-type schools that outrank Pine Creek locally – The Classical Academy High School and TCA College Pathways – have higher test scores, but they serve far fewer students with much smaller class sizes, putting Pine Creek's achievement in context as a large, comprehensive school.

The most notable area for improvement is chronic absenteeism. At 23.7%, Pine Creek's rate is higher than the district's 19.7% average, though still below the statewide 28.4%. Math and science, while strong compared to state averages, don't quite match the top local charter schools, and science scores have been volatile in recent years. Multi-racial and disabled students don't perform at quite the same high level as other subgroups. Overall, Pine Creek is an excellent, high-achieving school that combines large-school scale with top-tier outcomes. Its main opportunities are reducing absenteeism and closing the gap with its elite smaller peers in math and science.
