Summary:
Eight elementary schools serve ZIP code 95482, with grade spans from K–4 through K–8: six in Ukiah Unified and two charter schools. In 2025–26, the six district schools’ average proficiency was 31% in ELA, 30% in math, and 26% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38%, and 36%, respectively. Results vary widely, so the most important takeaway is that the area’s schools are not alike: one leads the current results across subjects while another is last in each.
Frank Zeek Elementary was the clear leader among district schools, with 52% proficiency in ELA, 50% in math, and 38% in science—the highest results in all three subjects. It exceeded state results by 2 points in ELA, 12 in math, and 2 in science. At the other end, Oak Manor Elementary had the lowest results: 18% in ELA, 17% in math, and 16% in science. The leader-to-lowest gaps were 33 points in ELA, 33 in math, and 21 in science. Yokayo Elementary was second in the current results and came within one point of Frank Zeek in science. The charter schools’ older, 2024–25 results also stand out in science: Tree of Life Charter scored 93% and River Oak Charter 60%, versus a state result of 33% that year.
Recent changes differ by school and subject. From 2024–25 to 2025–26, Calpella Elementary gained 9 points in ELA and 10 in math, while Yokayo gained 15 points in science; Frank Zeek’s ELA result fell 7 points but remained the district’s highest. SchoolDigger’s 2025–26 statewide rankings also placed Frank Zeek at the 67th percentile and Oak Manor at the 8th. In 2024–25, student–teacher ratios ranged from 18.6 at Tree of Life to 23.5 at Grace Hudson Elementary, with no simple pattern linking ratios to results. All schools reported free/reduced lunch eligibility for 2024–25; Frank Zeek’s share was 76%, compared with 79% to 97% at the other district schools. These measures offer context, not an explanation for score differences.
