Ukiah Unified

Ukiah Unified has 11 schools—six elementary, two middle, two high schools and one alternative school—with 5,871 students, serving children from elementary through high school. In 2025–26, the schools’ average proficiency was below the state average in all three tested subjects: 33% in English language arts (ELA), 23% in mathematics and 25% in science, compared with 49%, 38% and 36% statewide. The clearest overall finding is that results differ sharply from school to school, especially in mathematics, where scores ranged from 3% to 50%.

Frank Zeek Elementary stands out across subjects: it had the highest all-grades mathematics score at 50% and science score at 38%, and ranked second in ELA at 52%; it was above the state in all three. Ukiah High led ELA at 53%, 4 percentage points above the state, but its mathematics result was 19%, 19 points below. Yokayo Elementary was another science standout at 37%, just above the state. At the other end, South Valley High (Continuation) had the lowest results in every subject: 9% in ELA, 3% in mathematics and 8% in science—40, 35 and 28 points below the state, respectively.

Average scores improved from 2024–25 to 2025–26 by 2 points in ELA, 2 in mathematics and 4 in science, though not every school improved. Ukiah Independent Study Academy gained 15 points in ELA and 16 in science, while Frank Zeek fell 7 points in both subjects. SchoolDigger’s rankings tell a separate story: Calpella Elementary rose from the 12th to the 30th percentile between 2023–24 and 2025–26, while Grace Hudson Elementary fell from the 37th to the 19th. Other measures do not neatly track test results: student-teacher ratios ranged from 15.0 at South Valley to 23.5 at Grace Hudson, and free/reduced lunch eligible figures for 2024–25 ranged from 74% to 97%. Because schools serve different grade spans and include different school types, grade-specific results can be more useful for comparing schools.
