Summary:
ZIP code 95112 has eight schools: five elementary, two middle and one high school; six report 2025–26 All Grades results, while ACE Esperanza Middle and San Jose Conservation Corps Charter have supplied 2024–25 results. Across the five elementary schools, most matched-grade results are well below state proficiency rates, but Shirakawa (George Senior) Elementary is the clearest standout, leading the other four schools in all seven grade 3–5 ELA, math and science comparisons.
Shirakawa’s lead is especially large in ELA: its grade 3 result is 54%, 38 points above the next-highest school, and its grade 5 result is 54%, 30 points ahead. In grade 5 science, it scores 41%, 18 points above the next-highest results. At the other end, Lowell Elementary is lowest in grade 3 and 4 math and grade 4 ELA, while Grant Elementary is lowest in grade 5 ELA and math. Lowell also has the lowest All Grades results among the six schools with 2025–26 results: 14% ELA, 5% math and 6% science—35, 33 and 30 points below state rates. Empire Gardens Elementary is a notable exception to its otherwise low ELA results, ranking second among the elementary schools in grade 5 math and science.
Across the same six schools, average All Grades results improved from 2024–25 to 2025–26 by 2 points in ELA and math and 1 point in science. State results rose by less than 1 point in ELA, 1 point in math and 3 points in science, so the area’s average gap narrowed slightly in ELA and math but widened by 3 points in science. SchoolDigger’s 2025–26 rankings also show a sharp contrast: Shirakawa is at the 60th percentile, compared with 6th for Empire Gardens, 2nd for Horace Mann Elementary and 1st for Grant and Lowell. The 2024–25 free/reduced lunch eligible measure ranged from 70% at Grant to 85% at Lowell; Shirakawa was at 83%. Shirakawa also had the largest elementary enrollment, 508, and a student-teacher ratio of 23, yet led every matched-grade comparison—these figures provide context, not an explanation for results.
