Summary:
ZIP code 94087 has five K–5 elementary schools—three in Cupertino Union and two in Sunnyvale—with 2,820 students in all and enrollment ranging from 350 to 840 per school. In 2025–26, the schools’ average proficiency was 71% in English language arts (ELA), 76% in math and 69% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38% and 36%. Most importantly, every school was above the state result in all three subjects.
Cherry Chase was the clear academic leader, with 84% proficiency in ELA, 88% in math and 82% in science—about 10, 8 and 6 percentage points ahead of the next-highest school, Cumberland. Cumberland scored 74%, 80% and 76%, placing second in each subject. At the other end, Chester W. Nimitz had the lowest results in all three: 60% in ELA, 57% in math and 55% in science. The spread between the highest and lowest school was 25 points in ELA, 31 in math and 27 in science, so strong area-wide results do not mean schools perform alike.
Recent results were mixed: from 2024–25 to 2025–26, the five-school ELA average fell 4 points, math was essentially unchanged, and science rose 4 points. West Valley had the sharpest declines, including an 11-point drop in ELA, while Nimitz’s science result rose 17 points but remained below its peers. SchoolDigger ranked Cherry Chase 63rd statewide, at the 99th percentile, and gave it five stars; Cumberland was 315th, at the 95th percentile, also with five stars. For context, all five reported free/reduced lunch eligible figures for 2024–25: 7% at Cherry Chase, 10% at Cumberland, 16% at West Valley, 21% at Louis E. Stocklmeir and 51% at Nimitz. Ratios ranged from 19.0 students per teacher at Cumberland to 21.8 at Nimitz; Cherry Chase led academically with a ratio of 20.5.
