Summary:
Zip code 93930 has eight schools—four elementary, one middle and three high schools—serving students from kindergarten through high school, with enrollments ranging from 35 to 1,199; options include a K–8 school, a magnet school and a continuation high school. The clearest shared academic concern is math, especially in high school: the two high schools with grade 11 results averaged 8% proficient, compared with 32% statewide, a 24-point gap.
King City High stands out among the high schools, while Portola-Butler Continuation High had lower grade 11 results: King City led by 40 points in ELA (58% versus 17%), 16 points in math (16% versus 0%) and 13 points in science (25% versus 12%). King City’s grade 11 ELA result was also close to the state’s (58% versus 57%). Among the three K–5 schools, King City Arts Magnet led on all-grades results, with 38% in ELA, 28% in math and 26% in science; the other schools ranged from 29% to 30% in ELA, 21% to 27% in math and 19% to 25% in science. Bitterwater-Tully Elementary is a striking exception by subject, with 60% in ELA but 7% in math. Pinnacle Coastal Valley High has no reported 2025–26 test-score percentages, so it cannot be included in these academic comparisons.
Recent changes are mixed: ELA fell at six of the seven schools with current results, while math fell at four of seven; science improved at four of the six schools with current results. Del Rey Elementary had the largest science gain, up 13 points, and Arts Magnet rose 8 points in science. SchoolDigger’s percentile rank increased from 24 to 36 for Arts Magnet and from 18 to 25 for Del Rey. Context measures do not neatly track the K–5 results: student-teacher ratios were similar—21.8 at Del Rey, 22.7 at Santa Lucia Elementary and 22.3 at Arts Magnet—while free/reduced lunch eligible shares in 2024–25 were 84%, 89% and 88%, respectively. These are observations, not explanations for score differences.
