Summary

King City Arts Magnet is a public elementary school serving 424 students in grades K-5 within the King City Union district, and it stands out as the highest-performing of the three elementary schools in its district despite serving a student population where 88% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

The school has shown clear improvement, moving from a 1-star to a 2-star state rating, and it consistently outperforms its district peers, Del Rey Elementary and Santa Lucia Elementary, in English Language Arts and math proficiency. It demonstrates particular strengths in supporting special education students and English Language Learners, who perform at or above the state average. Notably, the school has significantly reduced chronic absenteeism and spends less per student than its district counterparts while achieving better academic results, suggesting its arts magnet program provides a tangible benefit.

When compared to higher-performing schools in neighboring districts, such as Mission Elementary or Bitterwater-Tully Elementary, a key difference is the economic background of the students served, with those schools having far fewer students from low-income families. Within its own challenging district context, King City Arts Magnet's effective support for vulnerable groups and its improving trajectory are positive signs for families.

Open Quote The Superintendents get a rate increase, yet ask the teachers to take a 1.5% pay cut and one school teacher group will loose two months wages this summer going from a 12 to 10 month pay schedule. It is flat out extortion and blackmail to hold the decision of the impasse of the contract over the heads of the teacher. The upper staff need to give back as well! Close Quote
