Summary:

Schools in zip code 90280 include 25 schools—15 elementary, 2 middle and 8 high schools—serving students from elementary through high school, with continuation schools among the options. Results are highly uneven: the strongest schools are well above state benchmarks, while the continuation schools have especially low test scores and high chronic absenteeism. That wide gap between schools is the most important finding for families comparing options.

STEM at Legacy stands out among high schools, with 94% in ELA, 48% in math and 50% in science in 2025–26; its ELA and science results were 45 and 14 points above the state, respectively. Victoria Avenue Elementary led the area in All Grades math at 61%, while Bryson Avenue Elementary led elementary schools in ELA at 60%. Among conventional high schools, South Gate Senior High scored 65% in ELA and 40% in math, both above state results. At the other end, Simon Rodia Continuation recorded 0% in all three subjects; Odyssey Continuation had 11% in ELA, 0% in math and 2% in science. Chronic absenteeism was 67% at Simon Rodia and 72% at Odyssey.

Results improved on average from 2024–25 to 2025–26 among the same 20 non-continuation schools: ELA rose 4 points, math 6 and science 5. Even so, science remained 6 points below the state average. Gains varied: STEM’s ELA result rose 25 points, while South East High’s math result fell 8 points. SchoolDigger ranked STEM in the 90th percentile in 2025–26, up from the 76th percentile in 2023–24. As context, reported school measures are labeled free/reduced lunch eligible for 2024–25 and range from 83% to 98%; high results at schools with high reported shares show that this measure alone does not distinguish schools by achievement. Test results are not supplied for Stanford Primary Center; KIPP Corazon Academy and Westbrook Academy have results only for 2024–25.
