Summary:
Zip code 90241 has three elementary schools in Downey Unified: Rio Hondo and Rio San Gabriel serve kindergarten through grade 5, while Williams (Spencer V.) serves kindergarten through grade 3. The 2025–2026 results are above state figures in all-grade ELA and math at all three schools, and in science at the two schools with reported scores, but performance varies substantially by school. The clearest shared-grade comparison is grade 3: Williams and Rio San Gabriel are well ahead of the state, while Rio Hondo is close to state results in math and slightly below in ELA.
Williams stands out for the strongest all-grade results: 69% proficient in ELA and 74% in math, compared with 56% and 49% at Rio San Gabriel and 51% and 44% at Rio Hondo. The gap between the highest and lowest school is 18 percentage points in ELA and 30 in math. In grade 3, Williams and Rio San Gabriel are close in ELA (69% and 67%) and math (74% and 70%); Rio Hondo is lower at 43% and 48%, respectively. Rio Hondo leads the two schools reporting science results, at 38% versus 37% at Rio San Gabriel. Williams’ shorter grade span means its all-grade results do not cover the same grades as those of the K–5 schools.
