ZIP code 90005 has four middle schools enrolling 2,582 students: three serve grades 6–8, while Equitas Academy #2 serves grades 5–8. Their 2024–2025 average results were close to California’s in English language arts (ELA) and science, but slightly lower in math. The most important takeaway is that those averages hide large differences: the top and bottom schools were about 21–25 percentage points apart in every subject.

John Burroughs Middle is the strongest all-around performer in 2024–2025, with 63% proficient in ELA and 48% in math—about 15 and 11 points above the state—and 42% in science, 9 points above.
