Summary

Portola Springs Elementary is a large, highly-regarded K-6 public school serving 948 students in the high-performing Irvine Unified School District, consistently ranking in the top 10% of all California elementary schools.

The school stands out for its exceptional support for English Language Learners, ranking among the very best in the state for helping these students succeed, and it also shows strong results for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. While performing very well overall, the school shows interesting patterns, such as particularly strong literacy development and a notable, district-wide dip in 5th-grade math scores that is also seen at nearby schools like Cypress Village Elementary and Beacon Park. Portola Springs achieves these results efficiently, with a higher student-teacher ratio than some peers like Eastwood Elementary, and it has successfully reduced chronic absenteeism to a very low rate.

Within Irvine's cluster of excellent schools, Portola Springs forms a strong second tier alongside Woodbury Elementary and Beacon Park, while schools like Santiago Hills Elementary and Stonegate Elementary represent the very top tier. Compared to a similarly performing school in a neighboring district, Foothill Ranch Elementary in Saddleback Valley Unified, Portola Springs does so with lower per-student spending, highlighting its effective use of resources.

Open Quote The school has been privy to poor leadership and some negligent teachers and the kids are suffering due to this. Irvine school district has one of the highest paid staffs and our children deserve better than this. When talking to the principal she simply made a statement that "she must protect her teachers first." As a parent I no longer want to feel helpless please help by filing an official complaint with iusd.org, calling the director Stan Machesky, Executive Director, Elementary Education, (949) 936-5055, [email protected], attending the board meeting at 5050 Barrancs pkwy on Sept 11 at 6:30pm Close Quote
