Summary

Grapevine Elementary is a public K-5 school serving about 730 students in the Vista Unified School District, currently facing significant academic challenges as reflected in its low statewide ranking.

Academically, the school performs well below both district and state averages, with only about 32% of students proficient in English and 22% in math. This creates a substantial gap compared to nearby schools like Casita Center for Science/Math/Technology and Empresa Elementary, where proficiency rates are more than 30 points higher in math. While Grapevine spends a similar amount per student as these schools, the outcomes have not followed, and its ranking has declined in recent years. The school shows particular strength in supporting students in special education and those experiencing homelessness, but struggles profoundly with English Language Learners.

Interesting comparisons show that other schools serving similar populations of economically disadvantaged students, such as Vista Academy of Visual and Performing Arts and the charter school Bella Mente Montessori Academy, achieve higher academic results. This suggests that improvement is possible within the community, and parents may want to explore the specific programs and practices at these neighboring schools to understand the different approaches available in the area.
