Summary

Dartmouth Middle serves 903 students in grades 6–8 in San Jose’s Union Elementary district. Its 2025–26 proficiency rates were well above California’s in English language arts (ELA), math and science, but below the district average in all three. The most important takeaway is that strong results compared with the state do not make Dartmouth the top-performing nearby choice: the nearby, same-district Union Middle scored higher in every subject.

Math is Dartmouth’s strongest subject against the state: 68% of students were proficient, compared with 38% statewide, a 30-point advantage. Fisher Middle and Bret Harte Middle also scored above Dartmouth in math and science; these comparisons include schools with different grade spans.

Results have improved since 2022–23: Dartmouth gained 6 points in ELA, 8 in math and 7 in science, and its advantage over state results grew in all three subjects.
