Summary

Liberty Alternative is a 274-student school serving grades 6–12 in San Jose, within San Jose Unified. The clearest concern is the combination of low test proficiency and very high chronic absenteeism: in 2025–26, 28% of students were proficient in ELA, 2% in math and 6% in science, while 55% were chronically absent. That absenteeism rate was far above the state’s 18% and the district’s 22%.

ELA is Liberty’s relative bright spot, and math is its weakest subject compared with both state and district results.
