Schallenberger Elementary

Summary:

Schallenberger Elementary is a public elementary school in San Jose, California, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade. With a diverse student population, the school consistently outperforms the San Jose Unified School District and the state of California in academic performance, ranking in the top half of California elementary schools.

Schallenberger Elementary's academic excellence is evident across various metrics. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school had 58.18% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy, compared to 50.42% for the district and 46.66% for California. In Mathematics, Schallenberger had 49.12% of students proficient or better, outpacing the district's 39.57% and the state's 34.62%. The school also performed well in Science, with 38.46% of students proficient or better, surpassing the district's 36.34% and the state's 30.18%. Schallenberger's strong performance extends to different student subgroups, including female students, male students, and students with disabilities.

While Schallenberger Elementary generally outperforms nearby schools in the San Jose Unified School District, such as Ernesto Galarza Elementary and Canoas Elementary, the public Hammer Montessori at Galarza Elementary also demonstrates strong academic performance. Additionally, Schallenberger's relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, coupled with its lower student-teacher ratio, may contribute to its academic success. However, the school has seen a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, from 7.0% in 2018-2019 to 21.9% in 2022-2023, an issue that the school and district should address to ensure continued progress for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote With the addition of Principle Chamberlin, the school has become a much brighter place. We started with the previous Principle who just appeared to be going through the motions until retirement. The school feels rejuvinated and refreshed all thanks to the new principle. Loving it now. Just wish class sizes where a tad smaller but that appears to be the norm in most public schools these days. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
