Summary

Hollister High is a large, comprehensive public high school serving grades 9-12 to over 3,300 students in Hollister, CA, operating within the San Benito High district.

The school presents a notable mix of strengths and challenges for parents to consider. A major strength is its exceptional 94.3% graduation rate, which is well above the state average and among the best when compared to nearby comprehensive high schools like Everett Alvarez High and Gilroy High. The school has also made impressive progress in reducing chronic student absenteeism. However, a significant area of concern is academic proficiency in mathematics, which at 16.67% is critically low and less than half the state average, creating a stark contrast with its more solid performance in English.

When looking at the broader picture, Hollister High serves a student population with high economic need, and its statewide ranking has declined in recent years. It performs at or above the averages for its district, which is ranked in the bottom quartile statewide. Compared to a school like Rancho San Juan High, which serves a similar community, Hollister lags in math and English proficiency. The school shows variable effectiveness with different student subgroups, demonstrating notable success with migrant students while other groups perform below average.

Open Quote I actually really liked the fact that it was a big high school (about 3,000 students). The thing about going to a big High School which is the only High School in the area is that it is really easy to transition to college. Also, I really enjoyed playing football there. It's awesome that every Friday night that's where everyone in Hollister goes. Hollister has a great Football program. Overall, i was pretty satisfied with my High School experience. Close Quote
