Summary

The Maze Middle is a Hollister district school in Hollister, California, serving 580 students in grades 6–8. Its 2025–2026 state-test results were below both state and district averages in English language arts (ELA), math and science. The most important concern is math: 13% of Maze students were proficient, compared with 38% statewide and 28% in the district.

Compared with six nearby schools serving the same grades, Maze was below every school in ELA and math. Attendance improved: chronic absenteeism fell from 47% in 2021–2022 to 24% in 2025–2026, though the latest figure was still 6 points above the state and district. The 2024–2025 student–teacher ratio was 20.2:1, close to the nearby-school average of 20.8:1; in that year, 66% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible.
