Summary

Dr. TJ Owens Gilroy Early College Academy is a small, exceptional public high school serving about 300 students in grades 9-12 within the Gilroy Unified school district, consistently ranking among the very best schools in California.

The school's "early college" model delivers outstanding results, with near-perfect graduation rates, virtually no chronic absenteeism, and test scores that dramatically outpace other local schools like Christopher High and Gilroy High. Remarkably, it achieves this excellence while spending significantly less per student than neighboring high schools and serves a diverse student body with equal effectiveness, as all student groups perform at elite levels.

This creates a striking performance gap within the same district, as schools just miles away, such as Mt. Madonna High, rank much lower. The data suggests the school's specific model and culture are powerful drivers of success, maintaining top-tier results even through challenging times and offering a compelling case study in cost-effective, high-achieving public education.

Open Quote This high school experience has opened up many doors for my peers and I. Many of us will be graduating with AAs of ASs by the time we graduate high school. I could not imagine having gone anywhere else for my college preparatory education! The environment is very personalized and friendly. This is the warmest school community I have even had the privilege of participating in. Close Quote
