Summary

Rio Vista Middle serves 637 students in grades 6–8 in Oxnard, within the Rio Elementary district, and is surrounded by 10 nearby middle schools. In 2025–26, its proficiency rates were below district and state rates in English language arts (ELA), math, and science. The clearest concern is math: 15% of students were proficient, compared with 26% in the district, 38% statewide, and a 24% average at nearby schools.

Results show some recent improvement, but the gap with the state has widened since 2022–23: ELA was nearly unchanged at 30%, math fell from 17% to 15%, and science rose from 14% to 16%, while state rates increased in all three subjects. Chronic absenteeism improved from 31% in 2023–24 to 22% in 2025–26, though it remained above the state’s 18% and the district’s 20%. SchoolDigger places Rio Vista in the 16th statewide percentile with 1 star, down from the 24th percentile two years earlier; its percentile is below every nearby school. For 2024–25, 65% of students were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, and the student-teacher ratio was 22.3, compared with a nearby-school average of 20.3. SchoolDigger’s effectiveness ranking for English Language Learner Students was notably higher than the school’s overall standing in 2023–24: the group was in the 47th percentile, compared with 24th overall. Its ranking for Homeless Students dropped sharply, from the 62nd percentile in 2023–24 to the 15th in 2025–26, when the school overall was in the 16th percentile.
