Summary

Oro Grande Elementary is a small, rural public school serving about 91 students in grades K-6 within the Oro Grande district, which serves a community with high economic need.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with recent test scores showing only about 24% of students proficient in English and 14% in math, placing it in the bottom 6% of all California elementary schools. This is despite the school spending over $26,700 per student, which is notably higher than many nearby schools. For example, Sixth Street Prep spends less per student but achieves much higher proficiency rates. A potential bright spot is science, where student performance has recently exceeded the state average, and the school has made impressive progress in reducing chronic student absenteeism from over 44% to 20% in recent years.

The school's small size and lower student-teacher ratio offer a more personalized environment than larger neighboring schools like Adelanto Elementary. However, performance has been volatile, with particular struggles in early grades like 3rd grade reading. The existence of higher-performing schools in the Victor Elementary and Adelanto Elementary districts, such as Gus Franklin Junior, shows that strong outcomes are possible in the region, suggesting Oro Grande may need to examine its instructional approaches and resource use to better support its students.

Open Quote I took my students to this school to find a caring environment that really focuses on the student. I think that the staff is fantastic and I will be enrolling my next child in this school when they get old enough. I don't understand the scores as this school has great staff, great student/teacher ratio, and great test scores. They have a long day and provide free busing to my home which is far away. They have great programs including music and art on a daily basis. Close Quote
