Summary

Cambridge Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 469 students in Concord, California, within the Mt. Diablo Unified district, and it faces significant academic challenges, ranking in the bottom 2% of all California elementary schools.

The school's academic performance is notably lower than many nearby schools; for example, only about 13% of students are proficient in English Language Arts compared to over 60% at schools like Strandwood Elementary, Bancroft Elementary, and Sequoia Elementary. This gap is consistent across all subjects, and chronic absenteeism at 20.6% is also higher than at these higher-performing neighbors. A very high percentage of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a level of economic need shared by other lower-performing area schools like Meadow Homes Elementary and Ygnacio Valley Elementary.

While Cambridge has struggled for over a decade without sustained improvement, the close proximity of high- and low-performing schools in the same district suggests local factors are at play. The school's reported per-student spending appears unusually low compared to recent years and similar schools, which may warrant questions for the district. Parents may want to explore how schools with moderate challenges, like Gregory Gardens Elementary, achieve average results and what specific strategies are being implemented to address attendance and learning gaps at Cambridge.

Open Quote Do not send your child to this school. Most of the students and their parents don't even speak English. How can they be teaching kids that don't understand the same language they are teaching in? Security and safety is also dreadful. When kids are dismissed, everyone and their mommas can enter the school campus whether they are parents or not. Anyone can just grab your child and walk off since there are no checks and balances. You get more security for your child at Chuck E. Cheese. My child was getting hit by a boy every day and I reported this to her teacher. She said she would look out for her but the very next day the same boy gave my daughter bruises to her face. No one is watching the kids on the playground as they claim. They tried asking the boy why he did this and he didn't even speak English. What kind of school is this? Going to look into any legal action we can take. DO NOT send your child here. Close Quote
