Summary

Campo Elementary serves 359 students in kindergarten through grade 6 in the rural community of Campo in eastern San Diego County, within Mountain Empire Unified. In 2025–26, 25% of students were proficient in English language arts (ELA), 17% in math and 11% in science; chronic absenteeism was 30%, down considerably over time but still above district and state rates. The main concern is that achievement remains substantially below the state in all three subjects.

Third grade is Campo’s clearest strength, especially in ELA: 44% were proficient, about level with the state and 12 points above the district, and the highest among nearby schools. Third-grade math was 42%, also above the district and second among nearby schools. Results weaken in grades 4–6; sixth-grade ELA proficiency was 12%, compared with 48% statewide. Across all grades, Campo ranked third of four nearby schools in each subject. Math was nearly level with the district, while ELA and science were lower by about 1 and 2 points, respectively. Science is the weakest subject compared with nearby schools.

Compared with 2022–23, proficiency fell by about 6 points in ELA, 5 in math and 9 in science, while the gaps with the state widened by about 8, 9 and 15 points, respectively. SchoolDigger places Campo at the 14th statewide percentile with 1 star in 2025–26, unchanged in percentile for the past three years; it ranks third among nearby schools, behind Descanso Elementary and Clover Flat Elementary, but ahead of Potrero Elementary. The 2024–25 student-teacher ratio was 22.1, the second-lowest among these schools, and 47% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible in 2024–25. One subgroup ranking stands out: SchoolDigger’s English Language Learner Students ranking fell from the 42nd percentile in 2022–23 to the 12th in 2023–24, shifting from above the school’s overall ranking to below it; subgroup data do not extend beyond 2023–24.
