Summary

Walter Reed Middle is a large, high-performing public school serving 1,580 students in grades 6-8 within the Los Angeles Unified district in North Hollywood, consistently ranking in the top 15% of all California middle schools.

The school stands out for its strong and consistent academic results, where student proficiency in English and Math significantly exceeds both state and district averages. What makes Walter Reed Middle particularly impressive is that it achieves this excellence while serving a student population with significant economic need, and it supports all student groups effectively, from Special Education to English Learners, helping them perform well above typical expectations. The school also maintains a lower rate of chronic absenteeism than most nearby schools, which contributes to its success.

Compared to other local options, Walter Reed's performance is striking. It dramatically outperforms neighboring Van Nuys Middle, Roy Romer Middle, and James Madison Middle—all in the same district with similar demographics—and rivals the performance of schools in the higher-performing Burbank Unified district, like Luther Burbank Middle. Furthermore, it delivers these top-tier results more efficiently, spending considerably less per student than many surrounding schools while showing steady, decade-long improvement.

Open Quote Poor facilities, high student/teacher ratio. SLC Lead and Principal are both new. Staff stability is also questionable. Just another big school in LAUSD; impersonal, bureaucratic, and mechanical. If you have a good student, they don't even want to talk to you for parent teacher conferences! I'm sure the IHP program is great, but the rest of the school is really not that nice. In hindsight, I regret putting my kid in Walter Reed. Close Quote
