Summary

North Hollywood Senior High is a large, high-performing public high school serving over 2,400 students in grades 9-12 within the Los Angeles Unified district, consistently ranking in the top 20% of all California high schools despite serving a community with significant economic need.

The school's standout achievement is its exceptional 96.2% graduation rate, which is remarkably high given that over 70% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. This success extends across all student groups, with strong academic performance in English and solid results in math and science that outpace both district and state averages. Compared to nearby comprehensive schools like Ulysses S. Grant Senior High, North Hollywood Senior High achieves higher outcomes with a similar high-need population. It also delivers these results efficiently, spending less per student than many neighboring schools with lower rankings, such as Sun Valley Magnet.

The main challenge noted is a chronic absenteeism rate of over 30%, which is higher than the state average and an area for potential improvement. While the school's performance is consistently strong, support for some specific student groups, like English Learners and those in Special Education, has shown notable variation from year to year. When compared to a high school in a more affluent neighboring district, like Burroughs High in Burbank Unified, North Hollywood Senior High achieves a comparable elite ranking while overcoming greater socioeconomic challenges and operating with significantly fewer financial resources per student.

Open Quote I am in the HGM (Highly Gifted Magnet) at North Hollywood High School. My teachers are all amazing and they have taught me extremely well. I feel that the HGM is one of the best opportunities to get a quality education in LAUSD. The acceptance rate from colleges/universities is great and the various academic teams at North Hollywood are constantly winning awards. Go Huskies! Close Quote
