Summary

Coliseum Street Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 218 students in a high-need Los Angeles community, where nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school has been improving recently, moving from the 6th to the 24th percentile in statewide rankings, but it still performs significantly below other nearby schools like Virginia Road Elementary that serve very similar student populations. For example, in math, only about 24% of Coliseum Street students are proficient compared to 57% at Virginia Road, and chronic student absenteeism, while improving, remains higher than the district average. Interestingly, Coliseum Street receives more funding per student than most of these comparison schools, raising questions about how resources are used to support learning.

Performance varies widely by grade, with some grades performing near district averages while others fall far behind, suggesting inconsistency in instruction. The school has shown particular strength in supporting its African American students, who rank above average for their subgroup statewide. While challenges persist, the recent positive trends in test scores and attendance within the Los Angeles Unified school district indicate that new strategies may be starting to work.

Open Quote My son was in Mrs. Woods-Long and she is the worst teacher I have ever encountered. She taught based on behavior not academics. She was absent a quarter of the year. My student never attended a single field trip and she would make inappropriate comments to the students like "you are stuck on stupid". I have even heard about her flicking students on the ear. Complaints have been made to Mrs. Diskin and nothing was ever done about it. Close Quote
