Summary

Northmont Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 422 students in the La Mesa-Spring Valley district, consistently earning an average 3-star rating in a community where nearby schools often perform higher.

Academically, Northmont's proficiency rates in English, Math, and Science are below both state and district averages, with a notable gap compared to schools like Fletcher Hills Elementary, less than a mile away. The school serves a student population with greater economic need than most of its district peers, with over half qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite this challenge, Northmont spends more per student than nearby schools and is showing recent signs of improvement, including a significant drop in chronic absenteeism and better performance for some student groups.

When compared to schools in neighboring districts like Cajon Valley Union that serve even higher-need populations, Northmont's academic results are stronger. The school's performance is also comparable to local charter options like Sparrow Academy. While work remains to close the achievement gap with its own district, the data suggests Northmont is effectively navigating its specific challenges and is on a positive trajectory.

Open Quote We have been very happy with Northmont. There is great diversity which I feel is important. My child's teacher is fantastic, teaching life skills along with fundamentals. The most awesome thing about the school is the PTA which puts on major events that enrich the experience. Close Quote
