Summary

Julien Hathaway Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 451 students in Oxnard, part of the Hueneme Elementary district, which faces significant academic challenges across the region.

The school serves a community with high economic need, and while its overall state ranking is low, it shows important strengths within its district, particularly in mathematics and science where it outperforms the district average. However, academic performance varies greatly by grade, with a notable drop in math proficiency by 5th grade. The school has the highest per-student spending among nearby schools like Richard Bard Elementary and Fred L. Williams Elementary, but this has not yet translated to proportionally higher academic results compared to these peers.

Chronic absenteeism is a challenge, though rates have improved significantly since a post-pandemic spike. The school has shown a gradual upward trend in its statewide ranking over several years, indicating some strategies are working. Comparisons with schools like Richard Bard Elementary, which has better outcomes with similar challenges, suggest factors like instructional quality or school culture may be key areas for continued focus and improvement at Julien Hathaway.

Open Quote Hathaway is a multi-year underperforming school. To deal with that a visionless District imposed a rigid curriculum of endless test prep. It failed further but lost arts, creativity and rewarded those teachers that stood for nothing but high stakes testing models that fail with EL kids. It has great kids that are not seen as deserving of happiness in learning how to learn. Staff has operated in a sick culture mode for decades. Those with talent-resented and sabotaged. What stands now is a group serving personal needs saying exactly the opposite. The current leader is so over their head-lacks insight, curricular design, delegates even the most fundamental tasks. Her work, above all, undermines true learning. She doesn't really know. The school is clean. Technology is so slow on arriving as to fully stop these kids from getting to a future where they must use it. No math nights, no literature nights. All school wide activity-almost none-seems directed by a library clerk. The school is failing. One thing that would help-creativity, the arts. Specifically science fairs, other signs of intelligent life. Close Quote
