Summary

Schafer Park Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 606 students in the Hayward Unified district, operating in a high-need community where the majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

While its academic performance remains below the state average, Schafer Park Elementary is a school on a steady upward path, having improved significantly from its lowest rankings a decade ago. It now consistently outperforms most other nearby district schools, such as Glassbrook Elementary and Park Elementary, in English and math proficiency. The school shows particular strength in supporting English Learner students and has achieved a dramatic 60% reduction in chronic absenteeism over the past three years, a critical factor for student success.

Interesting comparisons exist with very close neighbors. For instance, Southgate Elementary, less than a mile away, has higher proficiency rates and ranking, while Hayward Collegiate Charter also performs higher. This suggests school-level practices are key. For parents, Schafer Park represents a resilient community school that is making measurable progress, especially in upper grades where sixth-grade English proficiency now exceeds the state average, demonstrating its capacity to help students grow.

Open Quote Disappointed with the feedback provided by teachers and administration. My child did not receive any feedback on homework completed all year and no explanation for the inconsistent grading provided on report cards. I was told teachers provide feedback at after school pickup, but I work full time. All parents, including parents that work full time, should receive feedback from teachers. The admin is quite inexperienced and unreliable. The administration appears to listen to the concerns of certain parents (mostly Spanish speaking parents). However, the school is public and has students from all cultures and backgrounds. All students and parents should be treated equally, not just Spanish speaking students/families. Equity is an issue at this school. Close Quote
