Summary

Faith Ringgold School of Arts and Science is a K-8 public school serving 111 students in the Hayward Unified district, which faces significant academic challenges across its schools.

The school is currently facing severe difficulties, ranking in the bottom 8% of all California schools with very low proficiency in math (9.6%) and English (20.4%). A major concern is chronic absenteeism, with 40.8% of students missing too much school, which is more than double the state average and the highest rate among nearby schools like Park Elementary (26.8%) and East Avenue Elementary (33.1%). The school serves a very high-need population, with over 92% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Despite spending significantly more per student ($30,859) than other area schools—including higher-performing ones in Castro Valley Unified—academic results have declined sharply over the past decade. This creates a notable contrast with a nearby charter school, Knowledge Enlightens You (KEY) Academy, which serves a similar student population with much lower spending but achieves better academic outcomes.

Open Quote My nieces have gone here for 7-5 years this is my daughters first year here. I love the small class sizes and because it’s so small everybody knows everyone! Since there’s under 150 students K-8 my child is exposed to less children. Less children means that there’s less children to exhibit bad behavior. It’s such a small school it has a “big family” feel. So far so good! This year the kindergarten has one of the largest classes ever and were at 20 or 21 start of the year we were at 16-17. I wish it would have stayed that way but were still much smaller than any other school in Hayward. My child is already learning to read after only 7 weeks of school! The teachers really seem to care and it shows! I drive 20 min to and from school when I could have taken her .25 miles to the school next to our home and I know it is totally worth it! I’d drive even further if I had to! Close Quote

Open Quote Awesome school with tiny class sizes and creative, dedicated teaching staff. Teachers know every student by name. Project-based, maker-friendly, hands on, Common Core aligned and beyond! District identified as "independent", it still feels like the neighborhood community school it started as.

I love that parents here are active, engaged and committed to their child's eventual college attendance. This school rocks! Close Quote

Open Quote Good school with a real community feel to it. Small in size compared to other schools in the district, and one of the best performing. Operated a bit like a charter, it did not surprise me to hear it started as a community school before being absorbed by the district. Close Quote
