Summary

Heritage Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 376 students in Santa Ana, part of the Garden Grove Unified School District, which has shown significant improvement over the last decade, rising from the 9th to the 43rd percentile in statewide ranking.

While the school is on a positive trajectory, its academic performance in English, math, and science currently lags behind the district average and nearby schools like R. F. Hazard Elementary and Thomas Paine Elementary. An interesting point is that Heritage spends more per student than most of these neighboring schools, yet this higher funding hasn't yet translated to higher test scores, a situation that raises questions about how resources are used. The school has made a remarkable turnaround in student attendance, dramatically reducing chronic absenteeism since the pandemic.

Heritage Elementary demonstrates a particular strength in teaching English Language Learner students, ranking in the 71st percentile for this group statewide. Performance varies considerably by grade, with 3rd-grade math being a relative strength and 4th-grade math an area needing attention. Being in the higher-performing Garden Grove Unified district is an advantage compared to schools in the neighboring Santa Ana Unified district, such as Andrew Jackson Elementary.

Open Quote I attended Heritage a couple of years back. I have to say it was one of the best times of my life. I've met some amazing teachers as well as classmates. Even though Heritage is not the richest school, it still tried to provide us with the best. I remembered it was November of 2008, and we were going to science camp. Everyone thought that we would have to sit in those crappy school bus for 3 hours drive to the camp, but the school surprised us by raising enough money to get us the expensive tour bus. I honestly can say that everyone was very happy. Heritage was the best 6+ years of my childhood. If you give me a choice of going back in time to either go to Heritage or a rich school, I'd still pick Heritage. Close Quote
