Summary

Cinnabar Charter is a K-8 public charter school serving 156 students in Petaluma, California, operating within the Cinnabar Elementary district, which ranks in the bottom 7% of all districts in the state.

Academic performance at the school is significantly below state averages, with only 30% of students proficient in English and 17% in math, and it has experienced a sharp decline from a 4-star to a 1-star rating over the past decade. The school serves a student population with high economic need, with over 83% eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, and faces a chronic absenteeism rate of 21%, which is higher than both the district and state averages. Interestingly, despite spending more per student ($16,931) and having a lower student-teacher ratio than several higher-performing neighbors, these resources have not translated into stronger academic outcomes.

The situation at Cinnabar Charter presents a notable contrast, as it is surrounded by several high-performing schools like Meadow Elementary and Sonoma Mountain Elementary, which achieve much higher test scores with lower chronic absenteeism. This comparison extends to other local charter schools, such as Live Oak Charter and Mary Collins Charter School at Cherry Valley, which also perform significantly better, indicating that challenges are specific to Cinnabar's programs and context rather than being inherent to charter schools or the area.

Open Quote My Children were late starting school do to situations beyond our control, so they started at a lower grade for their age group. Cinnabar never hesitated to help get them started and placed them in the appropriate grades that were needed for each of my children. None of the staff or teachers ever looked down at my children or myself and have been very supportive to us and made me feel just as important and appreciated as all the other parents and kids. they have been a real help for us, and I know my children are safe and learning to the best of their abilities, with room to grow at the right pace. I strongly recommend Cinnabar School to EVERYONE I know who have children. Close Quote
