Summary

Virginia Parks Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 643 students in Modesto's Ceres Unified district, operating in a high-need community where most students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, ranking in the lower percentiles statewide, with science scores being a particular area of concern. However, the school has made a remarkable and successful effort to improve student attendance, reducing chronic absenteeism to a rate that is now better than both the district and state averages. Performance varies for different groups of students; for instance, the school has historically shown strength in supporting English Learners, while outcomes for other groups have been more inconsistent.

When compared to nearby schools, the picture is mixed. Virginia Parks spends less per student than some peers like Walter White Elementary and outperforms them academically, yet it trails significantly behind a school with very similar demographics, La Rosa Elementary, which achieves much higher test scores. This contrast with La Rosa within the same district suggests that improvement is possible. Furthermore, the school outperforms the nearby Aspire Summit Charter Academy in several areas, despite that charter school having more funding per student.

Open Quote My experience with VP is they not equipped to handle a child with ADHD or ODD. Do not send your child here if they are not robots. The school doesn’t have time to ask your child what’s wrong and will send them straight to the office. Therefore they will treat your child poorly because they don’t have time to deal with an emotional child. They have labeled my child emotional disturbed now and telling me they do not want my child at their school because they don’t have time to ask him what’s wrong or deal with his emotions. Please do not send your child here if they are difficult or different because they will get treated poorly and it will cause tons stress for you. I’m just trying to save another mother the heartache I’m feeling right now. I’m hurt and sadly deeply that my child may not return because he has anxiety. Close Quote
