Summary

Viejo Elementary is a K–5 school in Mission Viejo, in south Orange County, serving 447 students in Capistrano Unified. Its 2025–2026 results were close to California’s in English language arts (ELA), and above the state in math and science, but its standing among 10 nearby schools was weaker. The central finding for families is that Viejo’s proficiency was below the nearby-school average in all three subjects: 49% in ELA, 47% in math and 37% in science, compared with averages of 67%, 66% and 58%.

Math is Viejo’s strongest subject against state and district benchmarks: 47% of students were proficient, about 9 percentage points above California and 15 below the district. ELA was essentially level with the state, while science was about 1 point above it; both were about 22 points below the district. Against nearby schools, Viejo ranked third-lowest in ELA and math and third-lowest in all-grade science. Fifth grade is a brighter spot against the state: proficiency was 60% in ELA and 56% in math, respectively 11 and 19 points above state results. Even so, those fifth-grade results were higher than only two of the 10 nearby schools in each subject.

Results have improved over the longer term: from 2022–2023 to 2025–2026, proficiency rose 7 points in ELA, 10 in math and 14 in science. However, math and science have declined from their 2023–2024 peaks by 5 and 12 points. Chronic absenteeism also fell substantially, from 32% in 2021–2022 to 9% in 2025–2026, below the district’s 14% and California’s 18%. SchoolDigger rates Viejo at the 63rd percentile and 3 stars statewide; its percentile has fallen 7 points since 2023–2024. The student-teacher ratio was 24.8 in 2024–2025, and 52% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year.
