Summary

Old River Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 795 students in Bakersfield, part of the Panama-Buena Vista Union district, and it stands out for achieving solid academic results while serving a community where many families face economic challenges.

Academically, the school consistently performs above its district and state averages, with particular strength in mathematics and science. This is notable when compared to other local schools with similar student populations, such as Laurelglen Elementary and Sing Lum Elementary, where Old River's students show higher proficiency. The school also manages its resources efficiently, achieving these outcomes with lower per-student spending than several neighboring schools like Stockdale Elementary and Christa McAuliffe Elementary.

An interesting pattern at Old River is that student performance improves significantly in the higher grades, suggesting effective support as children progress. While chronic absenteeism has been a concern, the school has made strong improvements since the pandemic. The school's effectiveness varies across different groups of students, and it shows a clear performance advantage over schools in neighboring districts, such as Donald E. Suburu in the Lakeside Union district, highlighting the positive impact of its specific programs and environment.

When consequences are not handed out fairly and with appropriateness to the offense students lose the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and perhaps make different choices the next time.
