Lakeside Union

Lakeside Union has two elementary schools serving 1,695 students: Lakeside serves grades K–8 and Donald E. Suburu serves K–5. In 2025–2026, both schools were below state proficiency rates in all-grade English language arts (ELA), mathematics and science, with mathematics the area’s largest shared challenge: the schools’ average was 18%, compared with 38% statewide, a 20-percentage-point gap.

Lakeside stands out in all-grade ELA and science, while Donald E. Suburu leads in mathematics. ELA proficiency was 40% at Lakeside versus 31% at Suburu, a 9-point difference; science was 21% versus 19%, a 3-point difference. Suburu’s mathematics result was 19%, compared with 17% at Lakeside, a 2-point lead. Both schools’ results were below the state in each subject; the area’s average shortfalls were 13 points in ELA and 16 in science, as well as 20 in mathematics. In shared grades 3–5, Lakeside led in ELA each year and in mathematics in grades 3 and 4, but Suburu led grade 5 mathematics by 5 points. All listed shared-grade results were below their state rates.

Recent results show mixed progress: from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, Suburu’s ELA proficiency rose 5 points while Lakeside’s fell 1 point; Lakeside science fell 12 points as Suburu science rose 5 points. Mathematics changed little at Lakeside, up less than 1 point, and fell 1 point at Suburu. SchoolDigger gives both schools 1 star; Lakeside’s statewide percentile rose from 16th to 24th, while Suburu was at the 19th percentile in both years. As context, 2024–2025 student-teacher ratios were 24.6 at Lakeside and 22.3 at Suburu; free/reduced lunch eligible shares that year were 64% and 70%, respectively. Chronic absenteeism in 2025–2026 was similar at both schools, at 20.4% and 20.0%, and above the 18% state rate.
